Green credentials

Suffolk Carbon Charter - Silver Level Award

A summary of environmental achievements

We have put a Carbon policy & action plan in place, our Carbon project team are contiually working to achieve our goals. In 2011 we had Solar panels fitted to our warehouses, so we now generate our own energy. Training our drivers to drive more economically & safely. Recycling as much as we possibly can. Our highest achievement is obtaining the Silver Award in the Suffolk Carbon Charter Accreditation.

Personal testimony

So, how did we start and what are we doing you ask. Firstly, we needed the bones to build upon, as the ideas we were reading about sounded great but no-one was telling us how to actually go about doing something practical. We were keen, but the “green” world was slightly fluffy and unlike our industry (third party logistics) – this new world seemed very un-process driven. Luckily our main warehousing site near to the Port of Felixstowe is based in Suffolk, where the Green Light Trust are based also, and they took us in hand by setting us on the road to achieving our Carbon Charter awards, at minimal cost to us, mostly our time, but most importantly, with structure!!! We are saving money and the environment for not just us, but also for our customers. They need us to stay competitive in our world of rising energy costs, but they also need us to be thinking about their carbon footprint when we store and distribute their goods across the UK. The consumers, who buy their goods, expect this of them, so we need to support them with a strong “green-focused” supply chain.

Key lessons

Putting project teams together to research different areas proved excellent, it eased our workload but more importantly it motivated & encouraged staff to support our main goals.
