The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has identified energy efficiency as the most cost effective way to reduce carbon emissions. Here at ANSWER, we believe that the best energy is energy you don't use (closely followed by energy you can make yourself), so its encouraging to see major resources from the world's largest per capita polluter being directed this way.
The recommendation forms part of the EPA guidance for monitoring pollution and reducing emissions under the Clean Air Act. The guidance only applies to larger greenhouse gas emitters, but it is a message that should be adopted by all - and especially where resources are tight. If we can stop using energy we don't need, then the amount we need to deliver from renewable sources becomes more achievable - and everyone will have a tidy reserve of extra money to spend on generating the small amount they still need.
